Capella Kyoto opens spring 2026 bookings for 89-key sanctuary in Gion’s historic Miyagawa-cho
Reservations are now live for Capella Kyoto, the brand’s first luxury hotel in Japan, ahead of its opening in Spring 2026. Set in Miyagawa-cho steps from Kenninji and the Miyagawa-cho Kaburenjo Theatre, the 89-key property has been conceived by Kengo Kuma and Associates with interiors by Brewin Design Office. The hotel transforms a former elementary school site into a layered journey through Kyoto’s living traditions, including six suites with private onsen and an experience-rich Auriga Spa. Launch packages Gion Whisper and Capella Sojourn anchor the debut with dining, wellness and artisan encounters.
Unfolding like a contemporary machiya, Capella Kyoto guides guests through thresholded spaces that echo Gion’s laneways, from a shoji-lined arrival to a central courtyard crowned by a karahafu roof. Dining spans a signature restaurant evoking an ochaya teahouse, a Japanese venue that reuses wood and repurposed lamps from the site’s former Shinmichi Elementary School, and a French brasserie opening to a tranquil tsuboniwa moss garden that preserves a cherished sakura tree. The hotel’s Capella Curates program unlocks rare access to Kyoto’s craft lineages, including a private ochaya encounter with geiko and maiko, an urushi lacquerware journey with optional kintsugi, and a workshop inside a 150-year-old geta sandal atelier. Wellness centers on Auriga Spa, home to three private onsen rooms, wet and dry saunas, four treatment rooms and a contemporary fitness space. From 23 March 2026, guests can book the two-night Gion Whisper package with breakfast, hotel credits and artisan mementos, or elevate immersion with Capella Sojourn, which adds a chosen Curates experience, an omakase dinner for two, daily breakfast and a 60-minute spa treatment. With design that honors Kyoto’s 1,200-year legacy and programming that bridges temple quiet with tactile making, Capella Hotels and Resorts brings a quietly modern reading of place to one of the city’s rarest addresses.
