IHG brings Garner hotels to Greater China with a conversion-led push
IHG Hotels & Resorts has officially introduced Garner hotels to Greater China, adding its 14th brand in the region and strengthening its position in the fast-evolving midscale and upper-midscale segments. The launch reflects growing demand for hotel conversions and for brand models that combine efficiency, flexibility and guest appeal. Since its global debut in 2023, Garner has expanded rapidly, and its arrival in Greater China marks the next stage of that growth. For IHG, the brand is designed to offer owners a practical route to unlocking value while giving travellers a stay experience that feels relaxed, reliable and full of personality.
The introduction of Garner hotels comes at a time when the regional market is entering a more refined stage of development and owners are increasingly looking for adaptable conversion solutions. In this context, IHG Hotels & Resorts is positioning Garner as a highly flexible and conversion-friendly brand that can respond to different project types without losing the consistency of an international operating platform. The brand is intended to complement existing conversion-focused offers within the group, alongside Vignette Collection in luxury and lifestyle and voco in the premium segment, giving IHG a broader range of solutions across different market needs. For Daniel Aylmer, CEO of IHG Greater China, the launch underlines the group’s long-term commitment to the region and its response to rising demand for more resilient and sustainable hotel investment models.
From the guest perspective, Garner is built around individuality as much as consistency. The brand is aimed at what it describes as spirited, flexible travellers who want quality and reliability, but also value emotional connection and experiences that feel distinct. This positioning is expressed through three core pillars. Get Comfortable focuses on convenience and adaptability, with elements such as extended breakfast hours and 24-hour delivery services. Good Stuff to Keep You Going centres on flexible spaces and services, including self-serve beverage stations and varied breakfast formats. Made with Character adds a more personal layer through interactive touches such as welcome treats, community voting and creative details designed to let guests express their personality during the stay.
For owners, the commercial logic of Garner hotels is central to the launch. The brand has been developed to support light, medium and heavy renovation models, allowing different levels of capital investment depending on project requirements. This gives owners more control over costs and timelines while aiming to support stable returns and efficient market entry. The design system is meant to be both inspiring and adaptable, enabling each hotel to reflect local identity within a consistent brand framework. At the same time, the brand’s differentiated guest experience is intended to help properties stand out in a competitive market and translate individuality into long-term brand value.
The rollout in Greater China is already moving beyond a symbolic launch. The first regional hotel, Garner Beijing 798 Art District, is now open and is being presented as a flagship example of the brand’s conversion efficiency. According to the announcement, the project moved from owner engagement to soft opening in a short timeframe, reinforcing the practical benefits of the model. Further momentum is visible in multiple signed projects in key locations including Shanghai Lujiazui, Chongqing Jiefangbei and Hangzhou West Lake. Backed by access to more than 160 million IHG One Rewards members, as well as the group’s distribution, revenue management and digital marketing systems, Garner hotels enters Greater China as a brand built not only for fast expansion, but for sustained performance in a market where flexibility and differentiation are becoming increasingly important.
