IHG Hotels & Resorts has signed a management agreement with Lumbini Heritage Limited to develop Crowne Plaza Lumbini, a new 147-key hotel in one of the world’s most important pilgrimage destinations. Scheduled to open in 2026, the property will be the second Crowne Plaza hotel in Nepal, reinforcing the brand’s premium positioning in South Asia. Located close to the main sacred precinct of Lumbini and Gautam Buddha Airport, the hotel is designed to serve both spiritual visitors and the growing meetings and events segment. The signing underscores IHG’s strategy to expand world-class hospitality across high potential destinations in the wider region.

Set approximately four kilometres from Lumbini’s main pilgrimage site and 18 kilometres from Gautam Buddha Airport, Crowne Plaza Lumbini will benefit from a strategic location in a market currently underserved by international hotel brands. The hotel will offer 137 premium guest rooms and 10 suites, supported by a range of flexible meeting and event spaces, including a dedicated banquet hall for social functions, corporate events and religious group gatherings. By combining contemporary design with versatile facilities, the property is positioned to become a preferred base for domestic and international travellers arriving from Nepal and neighbouring Indian states such as Bihar and Uttar Pradesh.

Backed by the global standards of IHG Hotels & Resorts, the new property will reflect the refreshed Crowne Plaza brand experience that integrates business and leisure needs. Guests can expect purpose driven design that supports working, meeting and relaxing in one place, alongside the brand’s signature Plaza Workspace concept that transforms traditional lobbies into agile, connected hubs for collaboration and informal gatherings. The patented WorkLife Room layout is intended to help travellers balance productivity, rest and wellbeing within the same space, aligning with the expectations of modern premium travellers and MICE guests.

For IHG Hotels & Resorts, the signing strengthens an already growing presence in South West Asia. The company continues to expand its portfolio and pipeline across multiple segments, with Crowne Plaza playing a key role in the premium tier. In India alone, IHG currently operates 51 hotels across six brands, including Six Senses, InterContinental Hotels and Resorts, Crowne Plaza, voco Hotels, Holiday Inn Resort and Holiday Inn Express, with 72 additional properties due to open in the next three to five years. The addition of Crowne Plaza Lumbini aligns with this broader growth plan while supporting the development of Nepal’s tourism infrastructure in a city of deep spiritual and cultural significance.
