Meliá Hotels International is set to enter Honduras for the first time with the opening of Sol Roatán Media Luna Resort in December. Located on the island of Roatán, one of the Caribbean’s more secluded and unspoilt destinations, the new resort will operate under the revitalized Sol by Meliá brand. Positioned on the island’s quieter southern coast, it aims to offer a contemporary take on the classic summer holiday, designed for today’s multigenerational travelers. The project reinforces the company’s strategy of expanding in authentic, nature-rich destinations while prioritizing sustainable leisure tourism.

Set beside the Mesoamerican Reef System, the world’s second-largest barrier reef, Roatán provides a powerful natural backdrop for the new opening. Guests will have access to tranquil beaches such as Camp Bay, mangrove tunnel excursions in Oak Ridge and boat trips to islets like Little French Key, while the surrounding marine environment is home to sea turtles, rays, tropical fish and whale sharks, making the island a major draw for diving and snorkeling enthusiasts. Located away from the busier West End, the resort’s southern-coast setting is designed to appeal to visitors seeking a quieter, more nature-immersive Caribbean experience.

The 4-star Sol Roatán Media Luna Resort, currently operating as Media Luna Resort & Beach Club, will offer a broad range of amenities tailored to families, couples and groups. Facilities include a buffet restaurant, outdoor swimming pool, children’s activities and a diving center with private dock, with plans to add a wellness spa and dedicated event and meeting spaces. A comprehensive renovation will bring the property in line with the refreshed Sol by Meliá identity, emphasizing functional lifestyle design, integrated technology and programming that blends relaxation, entertainment and connection to the local environment.

Under the renewed Sol by Meliá concept, the resort will focus on reinterpreting the traditional summer holiday for modern travelers, with experiences aimed at multigenerational families, couples, groups of friends and senior guests. The brand’s approach combines themed activities and all-age entertainment with spaces designed for calm, nature-facing downtime, highlighting an inclusive, easygoing atmosphere that encourages guests to reconnect with the simple pleasures of vacation.

The project has been made possible through the collaboration between Meliá Hotels International and HMResorts, led by entrepreneur Piero Dibattista, whose longstanding involvement in Roatán’s tourism development has helped bring the resort vision to life. For Meliá Hotels International, the move into Honduras is positioned as a strategic step that leverages Roatán’s natural wealth and growing appeal for family tourism, while supporting the group’s emphasis on sustainable, experience-led destinations across the Caribbean and the Americas. According to Gabriel Escarrer Jaume, Chairman and CEO of Meliá Hotels International, the opening underlines the company’s commitment to leisure leadership and to destinations that resonate with evolving traveler preferences for authenticity and environmental responsibility.
