Nobu Hospitality has announced plans for Nobu Monte Rei, a new luxury destination at Monte Rei in Portugal’s Eastern Algarve. The project will bring together a Nobu Hotel, signature restaurant, villas and branded residences within one of the region’s most established resort communities. Construction is expected to begin in 2027, with the hotel anticipated to welcome its first guests in 2029. The development will become the centrepiece of a broader investment programme led by Norfin, spanning hospitality, residential living, leisure amenities and future additions including a beach club.

The project marks a significant step in Nobu’s expansion into Portugal. Set within more than 1,000 acres of unspoiled countryside, Monte Rei is centred around its acclaimed Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course. The setting gives the future development a strong resort foundation, combining privacy, landscape, golf, residential living and access to the coastline.

Nobu Monte Rei is planned as a year-round resort destination. Rather than focusing only on seasonal leisure, the development is designed to create a more complete hospitality and lifestyle environment for guests, residents and members. This broader positioning reflects the evolution of luxury resort destinations in Southern Europe, where hotels, residences, dining, wellness, golf and private leisure amenities increasingly work together.

The planned Nobu Hotel will feature 100 rooms and suites. The hotel will be supported by a signature Nobu restaurant, bringing the brand’s globally recognised culinary identity to the Eastern Algarve. For Nobu, food and hospitality are closely connected, and the restaurant will be one of the defining elements of the destination.

The development will also include 21,000 square metres of Nobu villas and branded residences. These residences will allow owners and guests to experience the Nobu lifestyle within the privacy of Monte Rei’s resort setting. The residential component is expected to strengthen the project’s appeal to buyers seeking branded luxury living connected to hospitality services and amenities.

Monte Rei already has a strong international reputation. Over almost two decades, the resort has become known for award-winning golf, high service standards, its residential community and its location in one of Portugal’s most characterful resort regions. The Nobu development is intended to build on those foundations while preserving the privacy and authenticity that have long shaped Monte Rei’s identity.

The project also reflects the growing role of branded residences in luxury hospitality. High-end buyers increasingly want homes connected to recognised hotel brands, professional service standards and curated lifestyle experiences. Nobu Monte Rei responds to that demand by combining residential privacy with the cultural and culinary identity of the Nobu brand.

Design will be central to the project’s positioning. An international design team has been appointed, including DSA Architects and Rockwell Group. Rockwell Group is a long-standing Nobu partner and will help shape an architectural and interior vision that brings Nobu’s understated design philosophy into dialogue with the landscape of the Eastern Algarve.

The design approach is expected to connect the development with Monte Rei’s natural setting rather than overpower it. Nobu’s hospitality style often favours restraint, atmosphere and a sense of calm. At Monte Rei, that language will be interpreted through the surrounding countryside, coastline and resort environment.

For Norfin, the development forms part of a wider investment programme intended to enhance Monte Rei as a more complete destination. The programme spans hospitality, residences, leisure amenities and future additions, including a beach club. This indicates a long-term vision for Monte Rei as a resort community with multiple reasons to visit, live, dine and return throughout the year.

The future beach club is especially important for the destination’s positioning. While Monte Rei is known for its golf course and countryside setting, a coastal lifestyle element can broaden the resort’s appeal. It allows the development to connect more directly with the Algarve’s beach and leisure identity.

For the Eastern Algarve, the project could become a high-profile addition to the region’s luxury hospitality landscape. Compared with some of the Algarve’s more established resort zones, the eastern part of the region has a quieter and more characterful profile. A Nobu destination at Monte Rei gives the area stronger international visibility while aligning with its more discreet resort appeal.

The project also strengthens Nobu’s European portfolio. The brand has built a global reputation through a combination of hotels, restaurants and residences, supported by its distinctive culinary origins and lifestyle positioning. In Portugal, Nobu Monte Rei will introduce that formula to a resort setting shaped by golf, countryside, coastline and residential living.

The development’s combination of hotel, restaurant, villas and residences is consistent with Nobu’s broader approach to luxury. The brand is not only expanding through hotels, but through complete lifestyle destinations where dining, design, service and residential ownership are part of one ecosystem. Monte Rei gives Nobu a setting where this model can be expressed in a resort context.

For guests, the future hotel will offer a new way to experience the Eastern Algarve. The property will combine Nobu’s hospitality and restaurant concept with access to Monte Rei’s established resort environment. This creates appeal for leisure travellers, golfers, homeowners, culinary travellers and guests seeking a quieter alternative to more crowded resort markets.

The project’s timing also reflects continued confidence in Portugal as a luxury hospitality market. The Algarve remains one of Europe’s most recognisable resort regions, while branded residential and lifestyle-led developments continue to attract international interest. Nobu’s arrival adds another global luxury name to that landscape.

With 100 rooms and suites, a signature Nobu restaurant, 21,000 square metres of villas and branded residences, a setting across more than 1,000 acres, design by DSA Architects and Rockwell Group, and future resort additions planned under Norfin’s investment programme, Nobu Monte Rei is positioned as a major new luxury destination for Portugal’s Eastern Algarve. Its anticipated 2029 opening will bring Nobu’s hospitality, cuisine and residential lifestyle to one of the region’s most distinctive resort settings.
