Riu Palace Peninsula reopens in Cancun after major renovation
RIU Hotels & Resorts has reopened Hotel Riu Palace Peninsula in Cancun following a comprehensive renovation that has transformed one of the brand’s established properties in the city’s Hotel Zone. The resort, which has operated since 2012, returns to the market with redesigned accommodation, refreshed public areas, expanded dining and entertainment options, and the new Elite Club service. The reopening took place on 25 July 2026, marking a significant update for RIU’s Cancun portfolio. With 618 guestrooms, multiple pools and an enhanced all-inclusive offer, the property is positioned for families, couples and adults seeking a more premium resort experience on the Caribbean coast.
The renovation has reshaped the hotel’s visual identity. The resort’s 618 rooms now feature a more elegant and inviting design defined by natural tones and warm woods. This softer aesthetic extends into the lobby and restaurants, creating brighter and more spacious interiors throughout the property.
One of the most visible design updates is found at District Bar, where floor-to-ceiling windows frame views of the Caribbean Sea. This use of light and coastal scenery reinforces the hotel’s renewed resort atmosphere. Rather than only refreshing individual rooms, RIU has used the renovation to give the wider property a more contemporary and open feel.
The most important new feature is the introduction of Elite Club. This premium service is designed for adult guests who want a more exclusive layer within the larger all-inclusive resort. It adds private spaces, upgraded beverage options and priority room placement within the villa area.
Guests booking Elite Club receive access to a private specialty restaurant, a dedicated pool with a swim-up bar and a selection of premium beverages. The service also guarantees accommodation in one of the 100 best rooms in the villa area. Some of these rooms include a private pool, adding a more secluded and elevated accommodation experience.
The Elite Club concept gives Riu Palace Peninsula a more segmented guest offer. Families can continue to use the broader resort facilities, while adult guests who book the upgraded service can access more private spaces and added privileges. This allows the property to serve multiple types of travellers within the same resort environment.
Food and beverage has also been expanded. The renovated hotel now offers nine restaurants and seven bars, giving guests a wide range of dining and social options throughout the day and evening. This extensive culinary offer supports the all-inclusive model while allowing the hotel to create more variety across longer stays.
New additions include an American Country themed restaurant inside the 24-hour Sports Bar and the Candy ice cream parlour. These venues broaden the resort’s casual and family-friendly dining offer. They also add more informal spaces for guests looking for snacks, comfort food and relaxed entertainment.
The wider restaurant portfolio includes the main international buffet, the Italian restaurant Duomo, the Mexican restaurant Agave, the Asian restaurant Sakura, the Steakhouse and the fusion cuisine restaurant Krystal. Two further options, Pepe’s Food and Tiki Tako, are located in the pool area, giving guests convenient dining choices close to the water.
Outdoor leisure has been another major focus of the renovation. The resort now features a total of six swimming pools, each designed for different guest profiles. Three pools are available for general access, while one is reserved exclusively for adults, one is dedicated to Elite Club guests and one is designed for children.
This pool structure gives the property more flexibility. Families, adults, Elite Club guests and children each have spaces suited to their needs. In a large resort with 618 rooms, this type of zoning is important for managing atmosphere and guest expectations.
Entertainment remains central to the hotel’s Cancun offer. Adult guests at Riu Palace Peninsula have direct access to the four weekly RIU Party events held at the adjacent Hotel Riu Caribe. The group’s regional workforce is also significant. RIU employs nearly 8,000 collaborators in Quintana Roo, compared with a national workforce of around 14,000 employees in Mexico. These figures underline the importance of the state within RIU’s Mexican operations.
The renovation of Riu Palace Peninsula is part of a broader investment pattern in the region. Upcoming projects include the comprehensive renovation of Riu Palace Mexico in Playa del Carmen and the construction of Hotel Riu Palace Quintana Roo in Costa Mujeres. These plans show that RIU continues to see major potential across Mexico’s Caribbean destinations.
For Cancun, the updated Riu Palace Peninsula adds a refreshed all-inclusive product in one of the city’s most competitive hotel markets. The Hotel Zone continues to attract international leisure travellers who expect beach access, entertainment, dining variety and strong resort infrastructure.
